In Case of an Emergency | Melissa Zimmerman
Melissa Zimmerman is out to not only inspire, but also make the difference in the world! It takes more than just words to really make an impact on the lives of others, that’s why Melissa ‘has set out to take action’.
Along with being a fitness professional and competitor, you’ll probably never guess what it is that Melissa does.
I’ll give you a hint.
According to her, the group that she works with is the face of health and fitness. They are the ones that we should be able to look to as an example for our fitness goals.
Were you able to guess?
If you guessed that she is apart of an emergency response team, then you are absolutely right.
Melissa is an emergency paramedic, so she definitely knows a thing or two about saving lives. She incorporates her passion for fitness into her everyday work. Being in such an influential position, she felt it was important to lead by example, so she began to offer fitness and health programs to Paramedics, Police, Fire Rescue and Defense Personnel worldwide. This is impactful because it helps many emergency responders be fit and healthy for the job, and it also sets an example for others in the community. Melissa’s efforts to emphasize health and fitness will ultimately benefit lots of people all over the world. Her hopes are for it to have a trickle down effect from her to the emergency force to the public!
Fitness in the community is important to Melissa because it has been an important part of her life. Melissa has been a pro fitness competitor for over 12 years now. She has been decorated with many awards during that span, so it’s no denying all the effort she puts into creating a healthy fit lifestyle.
Some time ago, Melissa decided that she was going to take full advantage of her life.
“I wanted to be the best I could be. Lean, strong and have a longevity in my life so I could help so many others. My body is a machine and I want it to be fully functional and strong.”
Indeed, she has lived up to her expectations.
Ups and Downs
Even when living your best life, you can’t always avoid when nature takes its course. Maintaining a balanced, healthy, fit life, Melissa certainly wasn’t expecting what was ahead of her. She began to notice some slight changes like getting frequent migraines. This eventually led her to seek the help of a surgeon who discovered something that Melissa wasn’t pleased to find. “I had a spur bone growing towards my brain behind my nose from a previous trauma. I had a seven hour surgery to remove the bone and my surgeon stated that a major stroke could have been imminent,” Melissa recalls.
However, Melissa triumphed over all of that and did not let it stop her from conquering her mission. She has been able to travel the world to spread her message! “I travel all over to hold workshops on how to implement health and fitness regimens. I get to meet so many people and have an impact on so many lives. I have also been able to compete in various competitions in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Gold Coast and placed Top 5. I use my success to educate. I don’t need or even want anything out of the lifestyle I live. The biggest reward is seeing other people reach their goals. I love it,” Melissa exclaims!
What advice would you give to a young person today who wanted to ditch a sedentary lifestyle and become more fit and healthy?
I would say – Just start! Do little things because they all add up to big goals reached. I also tell all of my clients that they cannot get the body they love by hating the one they have right now. You have to love yourself.
Where should people focus most of their energy to get the most bang for their proverbial buck?
Nutrition! Its NUMBER ONE in changing everything.
Think about the 80/20 rule: If you get 80% of your impact from 20% of what you do, what is that 20% for someone just starting with health and fitness changes?
Again, it’s little things like changing small nutrition habits. Cut out the soft drink, cut down on breads and chips then you will notice big changes
Why do you think a person’s mindset is so integral to their success?
If you have a strong, positive mindset then your habits will be ingrained in your daily
routine. Small positive habits everyday lead to big success. If your mindset is strong and
you are focused, you cannot fail
