“I was 27, I was very unhealthy and unhappy.  I had just moved to Maryland and had gotten married. I was seeking a change of life. I had never worked out a day in my life and had never cared much about my health. One day, I decided to head over to the local gym and I applied for a job as a receptionist. I was hoping it would inspire me to work out.

Well, it didn’t.

It did however start my teaching career. They were offering fitness trainings like indoor cycling, yoga and Pilates so I signed up to become a trainer. I fell in love with teaching and from then on, I dedicated my life to helping others find freedom through health and wellness,” Kerri Verna says.

And that’s how it all began for her!

Yoga

One of the practices that helped Kerri get on a healthy track was yoga. It became a very important element of her life. So I asked her to explain a little bit about what yoga means to her. “Yoga is a mindfulness practice. It is a lifestyle that you live on and off the mat. Is not only about how you feel on the outside but it is about learning to find peace amongst your circumstances. The benefits are endless. Someone can only practice the yoga postures as exercise but usually students will feel a shift happen and start to feel differently about the world around them the longer they practice. Spirituality can mean many different things to many people and yoga can be the vehicle for a person to discover that there is more to this life than just the physical body,” Kerri explains.

Obstacles

Finding her way to fitness wasn’t easy. In fact Kerri faced a mental roadblock that she had to overcome to achieve success. “The biggest obstacle I have overcome is fear. For many years I was afraid that I would never amount to anything or that I would fail if I tried something new. It wasn’t until I looked fear in the face and decided to try anyway that I was able to see that most fear isn’t real. It is just an illusion made up of our insecurities,” Kerri says.

Rewards

Outside of her own gains, Kerri has found her journey to be very rewarding. She has a passion for sharing with and teaching others. And now it has become front and center in her life. “Meeting the students or people who follow my social media accounts is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. Seeing their faces light up when they discover that they too have the power to change their live. It is very rewarding,” Kerri expresses.

What advice would you give to a young person today who wanted to ditch a sedentary lifestyle and become more fit and healthy?

My advice would be to find a local teacher who you connect with and just start practicing yoga. If you don’t have access then you can find many wonderful teachers online. I have programs online that many of my students use daily instead of going to a studio.

Where should they focus most of their energy to get the most bang for their proverbial buck?

Meditation is really the most beneficial aspect of the yoga practice. I would suggest sitting quietly for 5 minutes to start each day. It is amazing what just 5 minutes of mindfulness will do for your entire day.
