Another Level | Serena Nixon

Motivated by Kayla Itsines’ BBG program, Serena Nixon discovered a passion for fitness. Her love for health and fitness has blossomed into much more than she could have ever expected. Beginning her fitness journey about three years ago, Serena has come a long way from the first time she experienced being a part an online fitness community. She has ventured into many areas of fitness, ranging from CrossFit to Soul Cycling and even beginning a fitness blog of her own.

Serena has recently began something that has taken her success in fitness to another level. Her latest accomplishment has not only been the biggest, but also the most impactful on other people that are seeking the same level of fulfillment.

Finding Fitness

Being fit hasn’t always been a huge factor in Serena’s life. In fact, it was the encouragement of a loved one that really inspired Serena to begin to take a look into the world of health and fitness.

“My fiance was actually the one who got me into working out. He had always been very dedicated to fitness, and shortly after I met him he encouraged me to go to the gym with him. I started with simply running on a treadmill and a little bit of weight lifting, but it wasn’t until finding BBG that my true passion for fitness began. The results I felt and saw in myself were addicting and after years of struggling with body image, I wanted to share with the world that if I could overcome the negative thinking, anyone can,” Serena says.

In the moment of finding a new passion for fitness, Serena did not even imagine that she would now be running a successful personal training business. The steps of her journey led her to pursuing an official certification in personal fitness. By 2015, she completed her NASM certification program and began to train others.

Impact

Whether it be face to face or through her online community, Serena always find a way to connect with people. “Talking to people that I have touched through my posts online has definitely been the most rewarding part of my journey. I’m a huge advocate for mental health, and I have been fortunate enough to connect with several individuals who found hope and love in what I had to say. It means the absolute world to me knowing that I have been able to help someone out there that needed it,” Serena explains.

Mindset

One of the things that kept Serena motivated and on the right track with health and fitness was keeping a strong mindset. The way a person thinks is highly important to their success. Serena is a prime example of if you believe you can achieve your goals, everything you shoot for will certainly come true.

“I believe that mindset is everything. The thoughts that you are putting into your head and out into the universe is what you’re going to receive. If you are constantly thinking negative thoughts about yourself, your progress, your results compared to others–you’re only going to get more of that. Practicing positive thinking is never easy, but again, what you give is what you get. Every little thought that has that ounce of positivity in it will come back to you, and from there you can build on it,” Serena reflects.

What three pieces of fitness equipment should everyone have?

A jump rope, a yoga mat, and a pair of dumbbells

In your opinion, what are the most overrated and underrated exercises?

Overrated — slow-paced, bodybuilding-type exercises where you take 5 minute breaks

between sets and sit on your phone instead 😉

Underrated — any bodyweight exercise (air squats, lunges, push-ups, sit-ups, etc.)

What are your go-to snacks when you’re on the run?

I love protein bars and apples!

What’s your beliefs on performance diet like?    Do you prescribe to a particular philosophy on diet (example: Paleo, Gluten free, etc…)?

I think that performance diets are not necessary for the average person–they are made for individuals with specific needs. I don’t prescribe to a particular philosophy. I believe in eating when your body is hungry and everything in moderation!

Can you share  a workout session that you routinely do in the gym?

SoulCycle hands down!
